This position is the one they should be in when initially making contact with a ballcarrier. From this initial contact position, the linebackers next drive through the sled, wrapping their arms around the sled station, keeping their heads up and their feet moving. They keep driving through the sled until the coach blows his whistle. Finally, the linebackersstarting from a good hitting position approximately three yards from the sledfire into the sled at full speed, simulate making a proper tackle, and follow through until the coach stops play.

The basic step in the drill involves requiring the linebackers to turn their feet and hips, first one way and then the other. The coach has the option of giving the linebackers four different movement hand signals: (turn) left, (turn) right, up, and down. If the signal is up, the linebackers must jump up and swing their arms overhead. , up) position. After a sufficient number of movements, the coach commands "go," which is a signal to the linebackers to do a forward roll and sprint past the coach.

The coach visually signals to the linebackers whether they should roll left or right. After a set number of repetitions, the coach gives the command "go" and the linebackers sprint past him.
