We argue that the closer the theories of organising and theories for organising are the more useful they are likely to be. Moreover, a single framework that provides both a theory of organising and a theory for organising is likely to be the most helpful. For us, that is one of the strengths of system psychodynamics. It provides both a way of understanding the processes of institutions and a basis for action. It is both a theory of action and a theory for action. UNDERSTANDING SCHOOLS AS INSTITUTIONS 41 SYSTEM PSYCHODYNAMICS System psychodynamics contains a number of linked concepts that come under the headings of psychodynamics and social systems theory (Obholzer and Roberts 1994; Neumann 1999; James and Connolly 2000; Gould, Stapley and Stein 2001).

Without the boundary, the core merges with its environment and other systems and ceases to exist as a separate entity. Boundary exchanges must be selective so that only designated objects of some kind enter and leave. It follows that the system must manage movement across the boundary in some way. The system requires various inputs if it is to function properly. The flow of inputs across the boundary and into the system is therefore essential.

The managerialist literature tends to emphasise that strong cultures (that is, unitary and deeply held cultures) impact positively on performance and as we have already argued above was a factor in encouraging the growth of interest in culture. There are a number of points to be made. Firstly, if the shape of the organisational culture is not in the gift of senior managers, they may be wasting resources by attempting to engineer the culture. That assertion does not invalidate the argument that strong cultures may impact positively on performance.
